Pennies from Heaven?

Pennies from Heaven

It's been seven years since my father passed. Sitting here in the comfort of my home and browsing through the FaceBook posts, I spotted a post from my relative sharing the pain in the loss of his twin sister, I couldn't help but to reminisce the many unusual encounters I experienced soon after the loss of my aging father. It was one of those things that I've struggled, whether to dismiss it as a passing fancy, or take it as a sign from my father. I've found pennies in places that defied explanation. Pennies that seem to point at an object with a message.

A few weeks after the completion of my sister's house that was rebuilt to suit a multi-generational need, so my mother can live with her during her final stage of her life; my sister emptied the family room at my parents' house that was formally a makeshift bedroom for her and her husband, so I can vacuum and shampoo the carpet.

During the vacuuming phase; I was running alongside the baseboard trim with the vacuum hose, I spotted something round, dull and brown near the cobweb from the windowsill to window frame. It was a penny, faced up with Lincoln's head pointing in the direction of the cobweb that seemed to be saying, "Don't forget the cobweb." I looked around for signs of a prankster hiding behind the dining room table or a wall partition in the living room. No sign of activity in the room, nor was there anyone in the next room. I shrugged my shoulder and thought, "Must be a figment of my imagination," and continued to vacuum the stills.

It wasn't my imagination. I picked up a penny and placed it in the front pocket of my jean and went about my duty. A few minutes later, I found another penny and another. It was after half an hour that I found a total of five pennies, and brought it to the kitchen where my middle sister and her son
was when they were taking a snack break. "I found all this in the family room. Did you mark each spot for me to clean with those?" Her eyes flew open wide and said, "I swear I made sure that the room was empty!" I was confused, and wondered if our dad was involved in this. I told her that I will test this theory and see if I can find two more pennies.

Ten minutes later, I came back with two more pennies in a spot that I was sure was bare. No one was following me to the room. And I was confident that it was a message from my father that he wanted to make sure that I pay attention to each dust spot, cobwebs, and any missed cleaning spot. After I combed the area the third time, no more pennies were found.

It has to be a fluke. Just a coincidence.

Three years later, I returned to college for a Spring semester, and I encountered something I just cannot explain. I was alone in the hallway while waiting for my next class to begin, I felt an urge to
use the washroom. Upon approaching the bathroom door, I looked down and spotted a penny. Lying face up with its head pointing at the door, it seems to be saying, "It's okay. Use the washroom now before your class begins." I picked the coin up from the floor and carried it in the front pocket of my jean. Penny number eight, I thought to myself. Unbelievable.

Penny number nine was in the same manner pointing to my car door outside on the parking lot.

"I get it, Dad," I said softly murmuring as I walked to school building. "Now let's see if the penny would stop being found."

Yup, I haven't seen one for awhile. It has been four years since I picked one up at the parking lot. The conclusions that I could make is that it could be a coincidence, or that there was a hole in the pocket of my jean for the penny to fall through. If it was that it fell out, I would have felt it, so it can't be that
it fell out. Maybe someone else lost theirs as they were fumbling with whatever that was in the pocket of their jacket?

Whatever it is that may have happened, I was comforted. Thank you.

Update as of May 4, 2015: Last Thursday, I found another penny on the floor of the laundry room faced down in front of the dryer. I was alone again, and my older son was gone for the weekend at the convention, there is no way that we could misplace it.
